NOTE: In the Thirteenth Annual Report of the Trustees and Superintendent of the Indiana Institution for Educating the Deaf and Dumb, to the General Assembly (Indianapolis: State Printer, 1856), Nathaniel Mather of Crittenden, Howard County, Indiana, is reported to have been killed in an accident at the school 24 August 1856.
